Well for starters you need funny accents and hats...seriously though, these elements actually set the scene due to their stereotypical nature. Elements such as these really point out that the film is a gangster classic.
Actors's and Actresses that are Italian/American are key to any gangster film, this is simply due to the fact that the leading gang in all of the world is the Mafia...an Italian/American gang of crime-lords, that all other gangs aspire to.
a setting of slums in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or even New York City...this will instantly make the audience realise they are watching a conventional gangster film.
This is not a definate factor of gangster films, however, using black and white colour schemes is a conventional aspect of pre-modern gangster movies as it emphasises the slums and streets of the city.
